Television personality, beauty queen, businesswoman, and philanthropist Basetsana Kumalo has officially announced her retirement from television production, marking the end of a distinguished 30-year career in the industry. The former Miss South Africa and CEO of Connect Channel (Pty) Ltd revealed her decision to step down, after years of making a significant impact in the world of media.
In addition to her work as a producer, Kumalo has written a memoir titled Bassie: My Journey of Hope, which reflects on her remarkable life story and career. Throughout her three decades in television, she has been involved in the production of popular shows such as Cheeky Palett, Date My Family, Becoming, and Utatakho, earning a reputation as one of the most influential figures in South African media.
As part of her retirement, Kumalo has passed the baton to Kopano Cowen, a seasoned producer and mentee whom she has mentored for over ten years. Kumalo praised Cowen’s talent and leadership, expressing confidence that the future of Connect Channel is in capable hands. “I have always believed in mentoring and seeing young women reach their full potential,” Kumalo shared. “Kopano is an astute mind with a deep understanding of where the future of content is headed, and I know she will take Connect Channel to new heights.”
