On Thursday, February 13, two of South Africa’s biggest radio stations, Ukhozi FM and Radio 2000, came together in a vibrant celebration of World Radio Day, themed Radio and Climate Change. The airwaves were filled with energy as the two stations joined forces for a unique simulcast of their popular breakfast shows.

The collaboration featured Ukhozi FM’s Vuka Mzansi breakfast show, hosted by DJ Sgqemeza and Mroza Buthelezi, alongside Radio 2000’s Big Breakfast show, led by DJ Sbu and Lelo Mzaca. Listeners were treated to a dynamic exchange as the presenters of both stations shared the spotlight in a one-of-a-kind on-air experience.

The celebration honored radio’s enduring influence, with Ukhozi FM taking a moment to pay tribute to legendary figures of the station, such as the late Kansas City Mchunu and Malindi kaNtuli. As part of the tribute, Ukhozi FM invited Radio 2000’s presenters to reflect on their own radio roots, and both DJ Sbu and Lelo Mzaca shared fond memories of growing up listening to the iconic Kansas, known to listeners as Umfana Omuhle Kunabobonke on Ukhozi FM.

The morning took an exciting turn as the two stations engaged in a light-hearted music battle, each showcasing its signature tracks. Ukhozi FM selected the popular hit Gucci by Mthandeni SK featuring Mawhoo, while Radio 2000 chose Boom Shaka’s classic Thobela. The rivalry sparked an interactive element, with listeners encouraged to vote on social media for their favorite track. Ukhozi FM’s Gucci emerged victorious, earning the highest number of votes and securing a place on both stations’ airwaves.

The fun didn’t stop there, as Ukhozi FM’s Gucci also dominated on Radio 2000’s social media platformsβ€”except for WhatsAppβ€”further solidifying its win. DJ Sbu couldn’t help but chuckle at the result, acknowledging Ukhozi FM’s strength in the radio landscape. “Ukhozi FM will remain the biggest radio station. Even on our side, they voted for Ukhozi,” he said.

For Ukhozi FM’s Mroza Buthelezi, the win was even sweeter, as he appreciated the support from Radio 2000’s listeners on their social media platforms, demonstrating the unity of the radio community on this special day.

As the stations wrapped up their collaborative celebration of World Radio Day, one thing was clear: Ukhozi FM’s enduring popularity and influence on South Africa’s airwaves remain unmatched.
