In a historic moment for the Balobedu nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa has formally recognized Princess Masalanabo Modjadji as the legitimate Queen of the Balobedu people. Holding the esteemed title of Balobedu Queenship, Queen Modjadji VIIβ€”often referred to as the Rain Queenβ€”has been legally acknowledged as the nation’s monarch under South African law, following her ascension to the throne.

Queen Modjadji’s recognition comes in accordance with the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act of 2019, specifically Sections 8(3)(a) and (b) as well as Section 12(8)(a), which outline the process for officially recognizing a new traditional leader once they come of age. This acknowledgment marks the culmination of a long journey for the 18-year-old monarch, who was unable to legally assume the throne until now. In 2016, when she was just 16 years old, the Balobedu Queenship was officially recognized, but it was her maternal uncle, Prince Mpapatla Modjadji, who served as Regent until her 18th birthday.

With her reaching the age of majority, Queen Masalanabo Modjadji is now fully entitled to the title of Queen Modjadji VII, and the formal recognition by President Ramaphosa is a significant moment for the Balobedu people. As per the requirements of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act, her name has now been published in the Gazette, and a certificate of recognition has been issued, solidifying her position as the rightful queen.

The Presidency hailed this development as a β€œnew chapter” in the history of the Balobedu nation. President Ramaphosa extended his congratulations to Queen Modjadji VII, wishing her a long and prosperous reign. He also expressed the government’s commitment to collaborating with the Queen and her Royal Family in advancing the socio-economic development of the Balobedu community. The formal recognition of Queen Modjadji is seen not only as a victory for the Royal Family but as a milestone for the cultural and historical legacy of the Balobedu people.
