The Gauteng education sector was left in shock following the tragic death of a matric exam marker at the Alberton Marking Centre. The teacher reportedly tripped and hit her head against a pole while leaving the centre. Despite being rushed to a hospital for urgent medical care, she succumbed to her injuries later that night.
Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, expressed deep condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues. βHer dedication to education was invaluable, and her untimely passing is a significant loss to the sector,β said Chiloane. The department has deployed its psycho-social support unit to assist those affected by this devastating incident.
In another alarming event, an acting principal at North View High School in Johannesburg was critically injured after being shot six times in his office. Two unidentified gunmen reportedly entered the school under the pretense of discussing a tree-felling quote before opening fire. The principal is currently in ICU, and law enforcement agencies are investigating the attack.
MEC Chiloane condemned the violence, calling it an assault on educational sanctity. βWe are committed to working with police to ensure these perpetrators face justice,β he stated. These incidents have highlighted concerns about safety and well-being in the province’s educational institutions.
