Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has lauded the swift and effective actions of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in apprehending a suspected drug trafficker at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA). On November 24, a 25-year-old Brazilian national was arrested after arriving at the airport from SΓ£o Paulo. This successful operation is a testament to the seamless collaboration between SAPS, airport security, and other law enforcement agencies, all working together to ensure the safety and security of one of South Africaβs busiest international gateways.
The suspect, whose arrival raised suspicions, was found to be in possession of over 3kg of cocaine, concealed on his body. With an estimated street value of R1.8 million, the drugs were cleverly hidden, but a thorough security screening at ORTIA led to his immediate detention. This arrest is a significant victory for law enforcement, sending a strong message in the ongoing battle against international drug trafficking, and highlighting the critical role of intelligence-driven operations in uncovering illicit activities.
Jabulani Khambule, ACSAβs Regional General Manager for Cluster 1, commended the combined efforts of all parties involved in the operation. “ORTIA is a key entry point to South Africa, and it is vital that we maintain a safe and secure environment for all passengers and staff,” Khambule said. He emphasized the importance of effective intelligence sharing and operational cooperation, which played a crucial role in preventing this drug smuggling attempt and demonstrating the collective resolve to combat crime.
Khambule also acknowledged the successful partnership between SAPS, airport security, and other agencies, calling it an exemplary model of teamwork in the fight against organized crime. “The arrest clearly demonstrates the value of intelligence sharing and operational synergy,” he stated, reaffirming ACSA’s commitment to supporting these efforts. This level of coordination between various agencies is essential in addressing the complexities of criminal activities at the airport and safeguarding public safety.
In his remarks, Khambule reassured the public that ACSA would continue to prioritize security at OR Tambo International Airport, working closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of travelers. “Public safety and security remain our top priorities,” he added. “We are committed to protecting South Africaβs borders and ensuring the well-being of all who travel through ORTIA.” With this in mind, ACSA remains focused on bolstering its security measures to maintain a safe and secure airport environment.
This operation marks another step forward in the ongoing efforts by South Africaβs airport security and law enforcement agencies to tackle drug trafficking and prevent criminal activity at the countryβs borders. The success of this arrest not only reinforces the strength of collaboration between various agencies but also assures the public that the authorities are working diligently to protect the countryβs borders and ensure a safe and secure travel experience for all.
