Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), did not hold back in his criticism of former President Jacob Zuma, calling him “corrupt” during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday, 25 November. Despite their reportedly friendly relationship, Malema made it clear that personal ties would not prevent him from speaking out about Zumaβs alleged wrongdoings.
βPresident Zuma and I have a good relationship, just as I do with President (Cyril) Ramaphosa,β Malema said. βBut that doesnβt stop me from saying he is corrupt, because he is corrupt.β His strong words came as part of a broader discussion on party dynamics, including recent defections from the EFF to Zumaβs party, uMkhonto weSizwe (MK).
Malema further emphasized that the EFF would no longer collaborate with MK, citing their practice of poaching EFF members. βTomorrow, we are marching to the Constitutional Court with everyone except MK. MK wonβt be part of our march. If they want to march, they must organize their own,β he stated, underscoring the growing rift between the two parties.
The media briefing also addressed internal party matters, including rumors surrounding senior EFF member Mbuyiseni Ndlozi. Malema dismissed claims that Ndlozi had been banned from the party, asserting, βI donβt know what you want me to answer about Ndlozi because I never said anything about him. EFF has never said anything. If we have something to say, we will call a press conference.β
Regarding the EFFβs future, Malema reassured supporters of the partyβs stability, especially in Parliament. βIf the EFF were to collapse, it will do so after five years. So, those votes are there, and they wonβt collapse. You have guaranteed five years of the EFF’s existence in Parliament,β he said, signaling confidence in the partyβs long-term presence.
When questioned about the possibility of more members leaving the EFF, Malema remained resolute, stating that those who were likely to leave had already done so. This marks a continued phase of internal consolidation for the EFF, as Malema focuses on maintaining control and strengthening the party’s position in the political landscape.
