Today, nine individuals accused of assaulting Pastor Paseka “Mboro” Motsoeneng will return to court. The group, which includes a grandmother and her son, faces charges of assault and intimidation. This case stems from an ongoing dispute between Pastor Mboro and the grandmother of his grandchildren over guardianship. The accused initially appeared in court on Wednesday, 20 November, and the proceedings are set to continue today.

In another significant case, the trial for the 1987 murder of student activist Caiphus Nyoka continues. Three former apartheid-era police officersβ€”Major Leon van der Berg, Sergeant Pieter Stander, and Sergeant Abram Hercules Engelbrechtβ€”are facing charges related to Nyoka’s death. The 23-year-old activist was shot and killed in his home in Daveyton after police officers stormed his bedroom in the early hours of 24 August 1987.

Last week, Nyoka’s sister provided testimony, and court officials visited the family home for an inspection. The trial is expected to run until 6 December, with further hearings to come.

Both cases highlight ongoing legal battlesβ€”one stemming from a family dispute, the other seeking justice for a political killing during the apartheid era.
