The Free State has a new acting premier. Jabu Mbalula, brother of ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, was sworn in on Thursday to replace the controversial Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, who is stepping down for medical reasons. Mbalula, currently the MEC for Community Safety, Roads, and Transport, will serve as acting premier until 15 December 2024.

Letsoha-Mathae’s departure follows a series of serious allegations, including accusations of corruption involving a local businessman, Patrick Phuti. Reports suggested that Phuti had bought two luxury vehicles for Letsoha-Mathae and her husband, Lawrence Mathae, the speaker of the Mangaung Council. The allegations, which surfaced alongside claims of bribery linked to the termination of a road contract, have raised significant concerns within the ANC, prompting the party to consider disciplinary actions against the premier.

Though details of her illness have not been disclosed, sources indicate that Letsoha-Mathae has faced mounting pressure since taking office in June. Her leadership has reportedly been marked by tension with the provincial executive committee, particularly regarding key appointments within her administration. Mbalula’s appointment comes amid this internal turmoil, with the acting premier expected to restore stability in the region during his brief tenure.

In his oath of office, Mbalula pledged to “respect and uphold the Constitution” and to carry out his duties with “honour and dignity.” He is expected to lead the province during this transitional period and work closely with the executive council to maintain governance and address pressing issues in the Free State. His appointment is seen as a temporary solution, with the hope that his leadership will provide clarity and direction in the coming weeks.
