In recognition of World Homeless Day, the Gauteng Department of Social Development, in partnership with Manger Care Centre and MES Shelter, conducted an outreach in Kempton Park to raise awareness and offer support to the homeless community. The event aimed to highlight the challenges faced by those without stable housing and to promote available resources and services.
A major initiative announced during the outreach was the introduction of a mobile wash bus, which will provide homeless individuals with access to hot showers and toilet facilities. Social work supervisor Moleko Shivambu emphasized that the project would not only address basic hygiene needs but also show compassion and support for people facing multiple challenges, including substance use.
Social work manager Adele de Bruin stressed the importance of making services like those offered by Manger Care Centre and MES Shelter more accessible to the homeless population. The outreach provided a platform for homeless individuals to share their struggles, including one womanβs plea for help in obtaining a lost identity document, underscoring the need for ongoing assistance in addressing the complex issues that contribute to homelessness.
