Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across Limpopo, stranding residents and motorists, and disrupting daily life. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued severe weather warnings on November 11 and 12, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Areas like Mokopane and Polokwane have been particularly affected, with roads submerged and homes flooded. The situation has left parents concerned about the safety of their children, who often cross low-level bridges and rivers to reach schools, with exams approaching.

Residents are urging the government to intervene, as many children face the risk of being swept away while crossing dangerous waterlogged paths. Mavis Dibakwane, a local mother, expressed frustration with the inadequate drainage systems in Polokwane, which have worsened road conditions and hindered public transport. The floods have impacted 14 of Limpopo’s 22 municipalities, including major areas like Polokwane, Mogalakwena, and Tzaneen, making it difficult for communities to carry on with their daily activities.

CoGHSTA spokesperson Molebatsi Masedi has warned residents to stay alert as the province experiences ongoing disruptive rainfall. With more rain expected, local authorities are on high alert and ready to respond to any further flooding incidents. The rains, which have already caused localized flooding in parts of the province, are expected to continue, further complicating efforts to manage the situation.
