A group of MK Party members has reportedly been left stranded in Russia after being sent there earlier this year for what they were told would be bodyguard training.

According to reports, around 16 individuals travelled to Russia between February and April, expecting a short-term programme that would prepare them for security roles once they returned to South Africa.

However, things allegedly took a turn when the group realised that the “training” involved elements linked to the Russia–Ukraine war, raising fears that they may have been misled about the purpose of the trip. Some members are now claiming they were placed in environments resembling military combat drills rather than civilian protection training.

Family members back home have also raised concerns, saying communication with the group has become difficult and inconsistent. Some relatives allege that their loved ones are complaining about harsh conditions and uncertainty around when they will be able to return home.

The MK Party has since distanced itself from the claims, with party spokespersons insisting that any members who travelled did so in their personal capacity and not under official party instruction. They denied accusations that the organisation had sent recruits to participate in foreign military activities.

Government officials have also noted that they are aware of the matter, but no formal request for intervention has been lodged yet.

For now, families continue to call for clarity as questions grow around how the group ended up in Russia, who facilitated their travel, and what exactly they were being trained for.
