A storm of outrage has erupted at Duineveld High School in Upington, Northern Cape, after a video surfaced showing a teacher in “blackface” during a school event. The educator, whose identity has not been officially released, was seen with his face painted black and wearing a curly wigβan act widely condemned as racist and offensive.
The video, which was widely shared before being deleted, prompted immediate backlash online and in the community. In response, the Northern Cape Department of Education moved swiftly, placing the teacher on precautionary suspension.
Education MEC Abraham Vosloo personally visited the school to address the matter, stating that the suspension was essential to uphold the integrity of the investigation and prevent any interference. Vosloo emphasized the department’s firm stance against racism, stressing that such actions deeply harm the emotional well-being of learners and create a toxic environment that undermines education.
This is not the first time Duineveld High School has faced scrutiny over racial issues. In September 2024, a student was caught using racial slurs during a TikTok livestreamβanother incident that drew condemnation and disciplinary action from the department.
The latest controversy has reignited calls from community leaders, parents, and advocacy groups for stricter measures to combat racism in schools. Many have demanded that the Department of Education adopt a zero-tolerance approach, including mandatory anti-racism training for educators and staff.
As the investigation continues, authorities have urged full cooperation from both staff and students. The department has assured the public that the matter is being handled with urgency and transparency, as pressure mounts for meaningful accountability and cultural change in the school system.
