A massive manhunt is underway for Jabulani Thabang Moyo, a Zimbabwean national and prime suspect in the deadly ambush that claimed the lives of two South African police detectives in Roodepoort last Friday, 8 August 2025.
Five days later, Moyo β who was being transported as an awaiting-trial prisoner β remains on the run and is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the attack occurred during a routine transfer from court. In a shocking turn of events, Moyo allegedly orchestrated or participated in a violent escape that left two officers fatally wounded.
Police Minister Firoz Cachalia condemned the killings in the strongest terms, calling them a βbrutal assault on the justice systemβ and promising that βno effort will be spared to bring this fugitive to justice.β
Authorities have now put up a R150,000 reward for any information that leads to Moyoβs arrest. The SAPS is urging the public to report sightings or tips through the Crime Stop hotline (08600 10111) or the MySAPS app. All reports will be handled confidentially.
Moyoβs escape has reignited debate around the security of prisoner transport procedures, with growing calls for a review of how high-risk suspects are handled in court and during transfers.
The SAPS continues to appeal for vigilance, warning that harbouring a fugitive is a serious offence. Meanwhile, communities in Gauteng and beyond are on high alert as police tighten the net.
Anyone with information is urged not to approach Moyo, but to contact authorities immediately.
