Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is expected to deliver a key update this morning on the state of South Africa’s electricity grid, amid what has become a surprisingly stable winter period with no loadshedding since 15 May.

The media briefing, highly anticipated by households and businesses alike, comes as Eskom enters the final stretch of its winter outlook period, with just under three weeks remaining. Last week, the power utility reported that generation performance had remained more stable than projected, raising cautious optimism across the country.

South Africans have now gone nearly three months without rolling blackouts, a sharp contrast to previous years marked by frequent and prolonged power cuts. The improved stability has been attributed to better generation capacity, reduced unplanned outages, and stronger energy demand management.

However, experts remain watchful, noting that while the current performance is encouraging, the grid remains fragile and susceptible to disruptions if maintenance backlogs return or unexpected breakdowns occur.

Ramokgopa is expected to provide clarity on:

  • The outlook for the remainder of winter and into spring;
  • Progress on Eskom’s planned maintenance schedules;
  • Updates on new energy projects or infrastructure improvements;
  • And whether loadshedding can be avoided in the coming months.

The minister’s remarks will be closely watched for signs of long-term energy recovery — or warnings that the current calm could still be temporary.
