Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Sihle Lonzi has taken a firm stand following the dismissal of Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, arguing that her firing is merely a first step. Lonzi insists the real priority should be to prevent similar governance failures in the future.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, Lonzi urged the relevant committee to “bulletproof” the appointment processes for key bodies like the SETA and NSFAS boards. He emphasized the need for legislative amendments, particularly to the Higher Education Act, to safeguard against the appointment of politically connected individuals whose presence may undermine transparency and accountability.
“For lasting change, we must remove political interference from these critical institutions,” Lonzi stressed, highlighting the urgency of protecting public entities that serve South Africa’s youth and workforce development.
His call echoes growing demands for stronger oversight mechanisms to ensure merit-based, transparent appointments — a move many see as essential to restoring trust in public sector governant.
