A chilling connection is emerging between the 2022 assassination of Pretoria-based DJ Sumbody and the attempted hit on actress and entrepreneur Tebogo Thobejane — and investigators are now digging deeper.
Sources close to the investigation have revealed that a businessman recently arrested in connection with the attempted killing of Thobejane may also be tied to DJ Sumbody’s brutal murder. The man, allegedly involved in shady tender dealings, is suspected of orchestrating both attacks using hired hitmen — a claim supported by damning WhatsApp messages and payment evidence uncovered by police.
Thobejane narrowly survived the assassination attempt in 2023 after her car was ambushed in a spray of bullets on a Johannesburg highway. She was shot, while a friend riding with her was left permanently paralysed. Investigators say the hit was intended to be “so brutal her family wouldn’t recognise her.”
DJ Sumbody, whose real name was Oupa Sefoka, was killed in a similarly violent fashion in Woodmead in November 2022 — riddled with bullets in what appeared to be a carefully planned execution. Though no one has yet been charged for his murder, the new probe has reignited public interest and hopes that justice could finally be served.
With these latest developments, authorities are under pressure to uncover whether the same underworld forces are behind both violent attacks — and whether a much larger criminal network is at play.
