The African National Congress (ANC) has fiercely condemned former President Jacob Zuma and his uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party after they publicly backed Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara—a stance the ANC calls “disgusting and disappointing.”
During a recent trip to Rabat, Zuma endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan, aligning with the MK Party’s position that supports Morocco’s historical claim to the disputed territory. This move sparked outrage within the ANC, which firmly supports Sahrawi self-determination.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula accused Zuma of betraying South Africa’s longstanding foreign policy and undermining solidarity with the Sahrawi people. The controversy intensified when Zuma was seen using South Africa’s national flag during meetings with Moroccan officials, prompting calls from the ANC for a formal protest.
This episode underscores mounting tensions between the ruling ANC and the emerging MK Party, signaling deep divisions over South Africa’s stance on critical international issues.
