In a dramatic turn at the ongoing tribunal, Judge President Selby Mbenenge has acknowledged that he engaged in what he described as “a flirtatious relationship with all levels of flirtation” with court secretary Andiswa Mengo. However, he was quick to draw a line, insisting that while he had hoped the relationship might evolve into something more, it never crossed into romantic territory.

Crucially, Mbenenge strongly denied ever requesting nude photographs from Mengo—an allegation central to the sexual harassment claims being examined by the tribunal. His testimony adds a complex dimension to the case, as the judiciary grapples with questions of power dynamics, professional boundaries, and personal intent.

As the proceedings move forward under the watch of retired Judge Bernard Ngoepe, the outcome could have serious implications—not just for Mbenenge’s career, but for perceptions of accountability within South Africa’s legal system.
