The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has come out in strong support of its senior MPs, Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama, following their arrests on fraud and corruption charges tied to a controversial R93 million locomotive deal during their time as Transnet executives.

The arrests, carried out on Monday, are linked to irregular payments to Trillian Asset Management, flagged in both the Zondo Commission findings and a 2018 forensic probe. Molefe and Gama, along with co-accused Anoj Singh and Thamsanqa Jiyane, were each granted R50,000 bail by the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

Molefe, who served as Transnet CEO from 2011 to 2015, maintains his innocence and dismissed the case as built on “extremely weak evidence.”

The MK Party denounced the arrests as a form of “selective justice”, accusing authorities of pursuing politically motivated charges aimed at discrediting vocal critics of the justice system.

As the case unfolds, it has reignited national debate over state capture, institutional accountability, and the growing polarization around high-profile prosecutions in South Africa.
