ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has made it clear: the alliance with the Democratic Alliance (DA) under the Government of National Unity (GNU) is no binding union. “The ANC is not in a marriage with the DA—this is a coalition,” he declared, pushing back against perceived assumptions of an exclusive partnership.

Highlighting the temporary and inclusive nature of the GNU, Mbalula emphasized that the arrangement involves more than ten political parties, not just the ANC and DA. He criticized the DA’s apparent expectation of a two-party agreement, saying, “The DA thought it would just be an ANC-DA coalition without including other parties.”

Reaffirming the ANC’s stance, he delivered a blunt message: if the DA is dissatisfied, it is free to leave. “If you feel this GNU is not working for you, then you have the choice to walk away,” he said, noting that the ANC is ready to continue governance with other willing parties. “There are others knocking at the door, ready to come in,” Mbalula warned, signaling that the GNU’s future doesn’t rest on the DA alone.
