A targeted law enforcement operation has resulted in the arrest of five undocumented foreign nationals engaged in illegal mining activities near Theunissen in the Free State province.

The arrests were made during Operation Vala Umgodi, a coordinated effort by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and mine security teams aimed at stamping out unlawful mining practices that jeopardize safety and economic interests.

⚒️ Caught Red-Handed Underground

The suspects, aged between 24 and 41, were apprehended deep inside a mining shaft in possession of an assortment of illicit and stolen items, including:

  • Ten underground mine telephones (suspected stolen)
  • 24 bottles of cough syrup
  • Dagga (cannabis)
  • Mercury
  • A weighing scale
  • Food supplies like instant porridge

🚨 Multiple Charges Await

They face a range of charges including:

  • Possession of suspected stolen property
  • Contravention of the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Illegal underground trespassing
  • Violations of immigration laws

👮 Ongoing Investigations and Court Appearance

SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli confirmed that investigations are still underway and that the suspects are scheduled to appear soon in the Theunissen Magistrate’s Court.
