In a series of high-stakes interceptions at OR Tambo International Airport this week, authorities nabbed three suspected drug traffickers in separate incidents involving daring and dangerous smuggling methods.
The Arrests:
- A Nigerian national was caught after attempting to smuggle 70 cocaine-filled capsules internallyβa risky method known as βbody packing.β
- A Brazilian woman was found carrying an even more staggering 100 cocaine bullets, concealed inside her body.
- Meanwhile, an Ethiopian suspect was arrested for possession of khat, a stimulant leaf commonly chewed in parts of East Africa and often controlled under South African drug laws.
Tough Stance on Airport Drug Smuggling
Airport security officials praised their vigilance and screening technology that led to these arrests, emphasizing the ongoing threat of drug trafficking through major transport hubs like OR Tambo.
βThese arrests send a clear message that our borders remain impenetrable to drug smugglers,β said a spokesperson for the South African Revenue Serviceβs law enforcement unit.
