The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is calling for urgent and enhanced security for its Members of Parliament following the assassination of IFP Deputy Chief Whip, Khethamabala Petros “KP” Sithole, who was fatally shot on May 31, 2025, in a suspected targeted attack at Buyafuthi Hostel, Katlehong.
Sithole, aged 68 and a respected veteran of the IFP since 1979, was gunned down by unknown assailants, in an incident that also left IFP Gauteng Provincial Secretary, Alco Ngobese, seriously injured.
A Party in Mourning, A Democracy Under Threat
In the wake of Sithole’s assassination, the IFP released a strong statement demanding immediate state intervention to improve the safety of elected officials, citing rising political violence and an environment that is increasingly hostile to public service.
“This attack was not just on the IFP. It was an attack on democracy,” the party stated. “We demand swift justice and protection for all public representatives.”
Broad Condemnation Across Political Lines
The killing has been condemned across party lines, with Parliament’s Presiding Officers — National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and NCOP Chairperson Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane — issuing a joint statement denouncing the violence and affirming the state’s responsibility to safeguard democratic institutions.
Both the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and African National Congress (ANC) echoed the IFP’s calls for action. The EFF, in particular, pointed to systemic policing failures that have allowed violent crime to thrive in communities and threaten public servants.
Remembering KP Sithole
Sithole was more than a politician; he was a pillar of leadership and dignity within the IFP, serving in various roles including Ekurhuleni councillor, member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, and national MP since 2010.
“He was a calm yet courageous leader, deeply rooted in the fight for justice and democracy,” said IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa.
A Renewed Call for Justice and Reform
With Alco Ngobese recovering and the assailants still at large, the attack has reignited calls for strengthened political security protocols, particularly in high-risk areas known for volatile community and hostel dynamics.
Investigations are ongoing, but the IFP and civil society stress that time is of the essence in restoring public trust and protecting those who serve the nation.
