Durban, South Africa β A dramatic twist has emerged in the tragic case of Olorato Mongale, the 30-year-old journalism graduate who was found murdered in Johannesburg earlier this week. One of the key suspects, Philangenkosi Sibongokuhle Makhanya, reportedly confessed to the killing just moments before being fatally shot in a gun battle with police in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirmed that Makhanya made the shocking admission after being confronted by a local resident at an apartment complex where he attempted to rent a vehicle. The resident, who recognized him from media reports, detained Makhanya and questioned him about Mongaleβs murder.
βHe Said He Did Itβ
According to Commissioner Mkhwanazi, the suspect confessed to the killing during the confrontation, appearing mentally unstable and showing signs of suicidal ideation.
βHe said he did it. He was not in a good mental state. The resident acted bravely but also with restraint,β Mkhwanazi said during a press briefing.
Soon after the confession, police surrounded the complex. When officers moved in, Makhanya opened fire and was killed in the ensuing shootout. No police officers were injured in the exchange.
Case Unfolding Across Provinces
Mongaleβs body was discovered earlier this week on a street in Lombardy West, Johannesburg, prompting a multi-province investigation. A white VW Polo, believed to have been used in her abduction, was later found abandoned in Phoenix, Durban, with visible bloodstains inside. The registered owner of the vehicle has since been arrested and is being questioned.
Manhunt Continues
Two suspects, Fezile Ngubane and Bongani Mthimkhulu, remain at large. Police have appealed to the public for any information on their whereabouts, urging citizens to remain vigilant.
βThis is a breakthrough, but our work is far from over,β said Mkhwanazi. βWe are determined to bring all those involved in this horrific crime to justice.β
Family Seeks Full Accountability
Olorato Mongaleβs family, though relieved by the progress, says they are still mourning and focused on achieving full justice.
βWe welcome the developments, but we wonβt rest until everyone responsible for Oloratoβs death is behind bars,β a family spokesperson said.
Anyone with information about Ngubane or Mthimkhulu is urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
