Johannesburg, South Africa“Where was God?” — the haunting question asked through tears by the brother of Olorato Mongale, whose brutal murder has left a community shattered and a family searching for meaning in the midst of unspeakable pain.

Olorato, a 28-year-old woman described as gentle, faithful, and deeply rooted in her Christian beliefs, was found lifeless in Lombardy West, Johannesburg, under circumstances that have horrified the country. Her brother, speaking at a candlelight vigil in her honour, delivered a heart-wrenching tribute that captured the grief of a family torn apart.

“She never missed a Sunday at church. She prayed for everyone, even strangers,” he said, his voice breaking. “So where was God when she needed Him the most?”

His words silenced the crowd — not in disbelief, but in shared sorrow and a search for answers that feel impossibly out of reach.

A Life of Faith, A Death Without Reason

Olorato’s life, friends and family say, was a reflection of kindness and unwavering devotion. She was known for volunteering at youth programs, supporting local causes, and being a constant presence at her church in Soweto.

Her murder has not only sparked a criminal investigation, but ignited a spiritual crisis for many who struggle to reconcile her goodness with the cruelty of her death.

Justice and Healing

As investigations continue, with arrests made and others still being pursued, Olorato’s family has asked for privacy — and prayers.

“We don’t just want justice,” her brother said. “We want healing. We want to believe again.”

The community has responded with an outpouring of support, holding nightly vigils, sharing her story on social media, and renewing calls for action against gender-based violence in South Africa.
