South Africa is mourning the loss of Presley Chweneyagae, the beloved actor affectionately known as “Cobrizi”, who has passed away at the age of 40.

The award-winning star of the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi died this morning, a family spokesperson confirmed. Details surrounding the cause of death have not yet been made public.
Chweneyagae rose to international fame for his unforgettable portrayal of Tsotsi in the 2005 film of the same name, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. His performance not only captured the hearts of South Africans but placed local cinema on the world stage.
Over the years, he became a household name, known for his work on television and film, as well as his activism and public speaking.
“Presley was more than an actor—he was a voice for the voiceless and a symbol of raw, South African talent,” said a close colleague.
Fans, fellow actors, and public figures have begun flooding social media with tributes, remembering him for his talent, humility, and impact on the arts and youth development.
The entertainment industry and the country at large are reeling from the loss of a cultural icon gone far too soon.
Funeral arrangements and official statements from the family and government are expected to follow.
