Seven teenage girls, aged 14 to 15, accused of assaulting a peer in a disturbing bullying incident in Yeoville, are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today.

The case, which was postponed on Monday, resumes as the court finalises a Preliminary Inquiry under the Child Justice Act, which guides the legal process for minors accused of crimes.

The assault, allegedly carried out at one of the accused’s homes earlier this month, was caught on video and has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows a group of girls slapping the victim, prompting widespread outrage and renewed calls for action against school and youth violence. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Authorities have confirmed that all the girls are being dealt with in accordance with child justice protocols, which focus on rehabilitation and accountability rather than punitive measures.

The case has sparked public debate on bullying, parental responsibility, and the role of social media in exposing youth violence.
