The community of Daveyton is in shock and mourning after the tragic death of 21-year-old Ntokozo Masilela, who was fatally shot during an armed robbery at a local petrol station early on Monday, May 5, 2025.
According to police reports and eyewitnesses, Masilela was a passenger in an e-hailing vehicle that inadvertently drove into the midst of a violent robbery at the Engen Garage. Armed suspects had stormed the station, demanding money and forcibly opening the shopβs safe before robbing it of an undisclosed sum.
As the e-hailing vehicle attempted to reverse away from the dangerous scene, the robbers opened fire, killing the driver instantly. Masilela, who suffered critical gunshot wounds, was rushed to the hospital by her mother but tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The terrifying incident unfolded as some robbers targeted the storeβs interior, while others stood guard outside, ordering customers and motorists to lie on the ground. Witnesses reported that the gunmen fired shots indiscriminately, showing no regard for civilian lives.
In the wake of her death, more than 2,000 residents gathered on Wednesday, May 8, for a candlelight vigil to honor Masilelaβs life and offer support to her grieving family. Emotions ran high as community members called for swift action from law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Masilelaβs funeral took place on Saturday, May 10, with heartfelt tributes from family and friends remembering her vibrant spirit. The community remains united in its call for justice.
