The South African government has declared its peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) a success, reaffirming its commitment to regional peace and security, even as the nation mourns the loss of 14 soldiers.

In a statement released after a Cabinet meeting on February 21, 2025, the government expressed pride in the role of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in the SADC and United Nations-backed mission. The operation, aimed at stabilizing conflict zones in the eastern DRC, faced intense challenges but was credited with making a meaningful contribution to peace efforts.

Paying tribute to the fallen soldiers, Cabinet honored their bravery and sacrifice, emphasizing that their efforts were not in vain. β€œTheir lives were given in the pursuit of peace, not only for the DRC but for the broader Southern African region,” the statement read.

With the official end of the SADC mission mandate, SANDF has begun a phased withdrawal of its forces from the region, working closely with regional partners to ensure a coordinated and dignified exit.

The South African government has pledged ongoing support for diplomatic initiatives, encouraging all parties to pursue non-military solutions to the conflict. It also commended SADC leaders for their role in supporting the return of deceased and injured soldiers, underscoring the strength of regional unity in the face of adversity.

As SANDF troops return home, South Africa shifts its focus from battlefield to negotiation tableβ€”reaffirming its role as a key player in Africa’s peace and security landscape.
