The Democratic Alliance (DA) has filed a motion of no confidence against Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and City Council Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu, citing a deepening service delivery crisis and leadership failures under Moreroβs administration.
The dramatic move comes just hours before Morero was set to deliver his State of the City Address, throwing the city’s political stability into question.
According to the DA, the motion stems from growing frustration over neglected infrastructure, unreliable basic services, and a perceived lack of accountability from city leadership. The party says communities across Johannesburg are bearing the brunt of the breakdown, with refuse collection, water supply, electricity, and road maintenance all in decline.
βThis administration has failed to deliver even the most basic of services,β the DA said in a statement. βResidents are fed up with excuses while their city collapses around them.β
Crucially, the DA claims to have secured enough support from coalition partners and smaller parties to potentially push the motion through, which could result in Moreroβs removal from office.
If successful, the motion would mark another chapter in Johannesburg’s ongoing leadership instability, with multiple mayors having come and gone in recent years amid political infighting and coalition reshuffles.
The date for the council vote on the motion has yet to be announced.
