In a rare but significant case of delayed accountability, the Eastern Cape Department of Education has been ordered to remove a deputy principal who was found guilty of misconduct for attending a matric after-party — a full decade ago.
The incident, which dates back to 2014, involved the then-acting deputy principal attending a late-night matric celebration that reportedly involved underage drinking and inappropriate conduct, raising serious questions about professional boundaries and ethical leadership.
While the original disciplinary process flagged the behaviour as “unbecoming of an educational leader,” bureaucratic delays and internal appeals allowed the individual to remain in their position for years. That has now changed.
Following a ruling by an education oversight body, the department has been instructed to immediately remove the deputy from their post, citing the need to uphold professional standards and protect the integrity of the province’s education system.
“The role of an educational leader is to guide, not to participate in settings that compromise the moral authority of the profession,” said an official familiar with the matter.
The decision has reignited debate around ethics in school leadership, with many questioning how disciplinary matters involving educators are handled — and why it took ten years for action to be enforced.
