South African talent brings creativity, culture, and couture to the forefront β proving simplicity and originality can steal the spotlight.
The 2025 Metro FM Music Awards werenβt just about the music β they were a full-on fashion spectacle, with the black carpet serving as the runway for bold expressions, cultural pride, and boundary-pushing style.
Themed βBlack and Crowning Greatness,β the event inspired a wide range of interpretations β from ornate headpieces to dramatic silhouettes and symbolic detailing. While comparisons to Nigerian red carpet fashion often dominate social conversations, this yearβs Metro FM Awards pushed back against the idea that over-the-top is the only definition of excellence.
βSometimes, simplicity speaks louder,β one fashion insider noted β and indeed, South African designers proved that restraint paired with originality can turn just as many heads.
π« Standout Looks from the Black Carpet
Babalwa M lit up the black carpet in Designs by Rati, wearing a pink two-piece ensemble with rose embellishments symbolizing self-celebration.
Rorisang Thandekiso, also in Designs by Rati, stunned in a purple, form-fitting gown, stepping outside her usual baggy comfort zone and owning it with elegance.
Lamiez Holworthy brought drama in a black velvet gown by QβMane, featuring 3D floral details that celebrated her as a “powerhouse.” Designer Quinx Ngomane walked with her, highlighting the powerful connection between artist and creator.
Scoop Makhathini (Siyabonga Ngwekazi) embraced tradition in a regal isiXhosa garment, while co-host Loot Love (Luthando Shosha) balanced modern and bridal in a white Scalo dress, crowned with an extravagant JoZEEst headpiece and Swarovski jewels.
Langa Mavuso sizzled in a bold red leather look by Neo Serati, accessorized head-to-wrist in Swarovski Pear Cut Matrix pieces.
Dr. Rebecca Malope, always proud of her individuality, wore one of her own original designs, proudly showcasing another of her God-given talents.
π€ Beyond the Glam
The black carpet, set in one of Mbombela Stadiumβs tunnels, was tweaked for the SABC 1 live broadcast, which unfortunately shortened the media line β a recurring organisational challenge. Yet, kudos must be given to the publicists and artist managers who worked overtime to secure interviews and ensure their talent got face time with the press.
And while some aspects of the carpetβs structure still need refining, the energy, creativity, and effort on display made this yearβs event one to remember.
