Johannesburg, South Africa β April 23, 2025
A wave of national pride and celebration is set to sweep through OR Tambo International Airport today at 14h00, as three young BMX cyclists from Limpopo arrive home after completing a breathtaking 1,700km journey from Burgersfort to Cape Town.
The trioβNdo Maxwell (24), Mahlakwane Gauta (22), and Karabo Mokowo (21)βpedaled their way into the hearts of South Africans when they undertook a bold mission to raise awareness about gender-based violence and generate support for their local bike club.
Their journey, which began in the rugged terrain of Burgersfort and concluded in Cape Town on April 14, has inspired thousands across the country. Along the way, they received messages of support, local meet-ups with cycling enthusiasts, and media attention that elevated their grassroots campaign to a national conversation.
βIt was tough, but we kept going because we knew it wasnβt just for us,β said Ndo Maxwell in a statement ahead of their return. βWe rode for our sisters, for our brothers, and for our community.β
Supporters, family members, media, and fellow cyclists are expected to gather at the arrivals terminal to give them a heroβs welcomeβcomplete with banners, cheers, and a sense of deep admiration.
Their ride not only brought attention to gender-based violence, a critical issue plaguing many South African communities, but also highlighted the power of youth-led initiatives and the unbreakable spirit of resilience.
Now back home, the Gauta BMX cyclists plan to use the funds raised to expand their community bike clubβoffering mentorship, safe spaces, and empowerment opportunities for young people in Burgersfort.
This isnβt just the end of a journey; itβs the start of a movement.
