Defense Attorney Charles Mnisi Seeks Additional Preparation Time; Trial Now Set for May 5, 2025
The #SenzoMeyiwaTrial has once again been delayed, this time until May 5, 2025, due to defense lawyer Charles Mnisi’s request for more time to prepare. Mnisi, who recently took over as the representative for accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, after the death of Thulani Mngomezulu in December 2024, informed the Pretoria High Court that he still isn’t ready to proceed. Despite having been given two months to prepare, Mnisi said he needed additional time.
Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, visibly frustrated by the continual postponements, expressed concerns that the frequent delays were starting to undermine the public’s trust in the justice system. He remarked that the ongoing postponements could lead people to believe the court is dragging out proceedings unnecessarily, though he emphasized that this was not the case.
In what was described as the “final postponement,” the judge gave Mnisi until May 5 to confirm his readiness. If Mnisi is prepared, the trial will resume on May 19, 2025.
The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, which began in 2022, has been plagued by numerous delays, leaving many questioning when this highly anticipated case will finally reach its conclusion.
