The Johannesburg Magistrateβs Court has handed down a severe sentence to two brothers, Wellington Sibanda (50) and Zimani Sibanda (45), for their involvement in the brutal murder of 42-year-old Okon Donatis. The duo has been sentenced to life imprisonment, in addition to a further 62 years and two months behind bars.
The brothers were found guilty of several charges, including two counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances, attempted murder, assault with grievous bodily harm, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

A Night of Violence and Terror
The horrifying incident occurred in September 2022 when Donatis and a friend visited a restaurant in Johannesburg. According to investigations led by Sergeant Moshe Mamovha, a group of armed men stormed the establishment, attacking the security guard and robbing the customers. During the robbery, Donatis was shot twice by the assailants.
Before the perpetrators could escape, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers arrived at the scene, prompting a violent shootout. Tragically, one JMPD officer was shot and sustained permanent injuries. While some of the attackers fled, they were soon tracked down in an abandoned building nearby. Police discovered firearms and stolen items in their possession.
The Long Road to Justice
Regional Court Prosecutor Charlotte Lutchmiah presented compelling evidence to the court, urging the Magistrate to impose the minimum prescribed sentence given the seriousness of the crimes committed. The court took into account the severity of the attack, including the tragic loss of life and the officer’s debilitating injuries.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has lauded the conviction and subsequent sentencing, reaffirming their commitment to prosecuting violent crime and ensuring that justice is served to victims and their families.
Both Wellington and Zimani Sibandaβs sentences reflect the gravity of their actions, and they will now serve life behind bars, along with the additional lengthy term for the multiple charges they faced.
Ongoing Commitment to Community Safety
Phindi Mjonondwane, Gauteng spokesperson for the NPA, emphasized the ongoing work by law enforcement and prosecutors to safeguard communities from violent criminals. The NPA continues to prosecute cases with vigor to uphold the safety and well-being of citizens.
The case serves as a reminder of the continued fight against violent crime in Johannesburg and the dedication of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice.
