In a stunning development, a police sergeant from Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, is set to apply for bail tomorrow after being arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of her husband and his pregnant girlfriend. Sergeant Nyiko Nyathi, aged 42, turned herself in to authorities at the Bushbuckridge police station yesterday, following an intense investigation into the brutal crime.
The Gruesome Crime
The shocking incident unfolded in February 2024, when Nyathi’s husband, Lawrence Alba Mashego (44), was attacked by a group of armed men at his home in Boikhutsong Trust, Bushbuckridge. According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the attackers stole Mashego’s Toyota Quantum and Ford Escort before kidnapping him. The stolen vehicles were later used by the suspects to travel to a house in Zoeknog, where they found Mashego’s female companion, Victoria Lebyane (44), in possession of his bank cards.
Robbed, Then Murdered
The assailants proceeded to rob Lebyane of R4,000 in cash and Mashego’s bank cards before coldly murdering both victims. “Mashego and Lebyane were then murdered by the assailants,” said Mdhluli. A thorough investigation by the police eventually led to the arrest of four suspects, one of whom pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 77 years in prison.
However, the investigation didn’t end there. Police continued to dig deeper, ultimately linking Sergeant Nyathi to the crime.
Sergeant’s Arrest and Court Appearance
Nyathi made her first court appearance at the Bushbuckridge Magistrates Court on Monday, facing charges of murder. She is expected to apply for bail tomorrow, but the case continues to shock and raise questions about the involvement of a law enforcement officer in such a horrific crime.
