In a heartbreaking incident, eight people have tragically lost their lives after their bakkie was swept away by powerful floodwaters while attempting to cross the flooded Kliprivier bridge in Heilbron, Free State. The victims were travelling between two farms along the Welgeluk dirt road on Saturday afternoon, March 2, when the disaster struck.
Strong Currents Overwhelm Vehicle
Police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle confirmed that the vehicle was overpowered by the fast-moving water, leading to a devastating drowning incident. Among the victims were an elderly couple, their two grandsons aged 10, a 14-year-old granddaughter, as well as a 34-year-old husband and his 33-year-old wife and their two-year-old daughter.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The tragic scene was discovered by a farmer on the morning of Monday, March 3, prompting an immediate response from search and rescue teams. Earle noted that search dogs, their handlers, and police divers were quickly deployed to the area to recover the bodies. After an extensive search operation, the remains of the victims were retrieved from the water.

Authorities have opened an inquest docket and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine exactly what led to this heart-wrenching loss of life.

Find alternative routes or wait for water levels to subside before proceeding.”
