A Congolese man arrested in connection with a disturbing incident at the Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria has appeared in court and was remanded in custody. The 41-year-oldβs name has been withheld due to an anticipated identity parade. He appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the case was postponed to March 28, and he will apply for bail at a later date.
The accused was apprehended on February 20, 2025, after a tip-off led the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) to his location in Yeoville. He faces multiple charges, including eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault related to events in 2022 and 2023. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that in one instance, the accused allegedly compelled several men to engage in inappropriate behavior, while in another incident, two victims were allegedly assaulted.
The disturbing nature of the case was amplified when videos surfaced on social media showing the victims being subjected to dehumanizing treatment. The videos have prompted widespread outrage, sparking public calls for justice.
So far, three victims, aged 20, 21, and 22, have come forward, and one additional victim has been identified. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more charges could be added as the investigation progresses.
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has condemned the acts shown in the videos, emphasizing the violation of the victimsβ rights to dignity and bodily integrity. In response, the Commission has launched its own investigation, seeking to ensure that the necessary resources are allocated to fully address the situation.
As part of its inquiry, the SAHRC will engage with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to discuss the progress of the investigation and ensure that the necessary steps are taken. The Commission also plans to engage with the Zanzou nightclub owner to understand the actions taken after the incident was discovered, including why a case was not immediately opened with the police.
The case continues to unfold, and authorities remain focused on ensuring that justice is served for all those affected.
