After spending several years in Durban, Baby Cele is back in Johannesburg for a new role in the highly anticipated Mzansi Magic telenovela Genesis. The 52-year-old, multi-award-winning actress from Umlazi, Durban, says it was part of God’s plan for her return to Jozi. Despite previously stating that she wouldnβt work in Johannesburg again after relocating for Uzalo, Baby is excited about the opportunity. She received a call to join Genesis, which she believes was a sign that it was meant to be.
Known for her extensive acting career, Baby Cele is thrilled about her new character in Genesis. While she remains tight-lipped about the role, she shares her deep connection with the showβs storyline. “It speaks directly to me,” she said, adding that the role is made easier by working with familiar faces from her past projects. Cele is particularly excited about being part of an all-Mzansi star cast, which includes notable actors such as Buyile Mdladla from Gomora and Nay Maps from Umkhokha: The Curse.
Although she’s back in Joburg for work, Baby is still committed to her roots in Durban, where she practices her ubungoma duties. She shared that she sought permission from her ancestors before taking on this new project. “I go back to Durban to practice my ubungoma duties,” she explained, indicating that her spiritual practices remain an essential part of her life.
The upcoming Genesis promises to be an emotional rollercoaster for viewers, according to Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net. Set in the competitive gospel music industry, the telenovela will explore themes of family, power struggles, love, and faith. Fans are in for an intense and relatable drama when Genesis premieres.
