Sassa beneficiaries have received a welcome update with the announcement that the deadline to swap their gold Sassa cards for the new black Postbank cards has been extended. Initially set for 28 February, the new deadline is now 20 March 2025. This extension aims to give beneficiaries more time to make the switch and ensure a smooth transition to the new cards.
Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi, along with Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe, assured the public that this decision was made in response to the concerns and frustrations voiced by social grant recipients. They urged beneficiaries to complete the card swap well ahead of the new deadline, to avoid last-minute rushes.

While the deadline remains in place for swapping the cards, the ministers clarified that grant payments will continue as usual. Beneficiaries who havenβt switched their cards by 20 March will still receive their grants, but they will need to visit their nearest Post Office branch to access their funds. The ministers are working with various departments and retailers to make the process as accessible as possible.
To support rural areas and ensure a smooth process nationwide, mobile offices will be deployed, and the number of available service sites will be expanded. The ministers emphasized that daily updates will be provided, and any arising issues will be promptly addressed, with community leaders also being engaged to ensure clear communication and assistance for all beneficiaries.
