Gautengβs disaster management teams are on high alert as heavy rain is expected to continue through Thursday, following an orange level 5 warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS). With the threat of severe weather, Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, assured the public that monitoring teams are deployed across all seven regions, particularly in vulnerable informal settlements. The Aquatic Rescue Unit has also been placed on standby, with fire stations ready to respond to any emergencies.
The SAWS has warned of severe thunderstorms affecting the southern Free State, northern Eastern Cape, and Gauteng provinces. In addition to heavy rainfall, these storms may bring damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail. The risk of localized flooding is especially high in low-lying areas, posing a threat to roads, bridges, and vulnerable communities.

Mulaudzi urged caution from both motorists and pedestrians, as rain and slippery roads could severely impact visibility and road safety. The weather service also highlighted the danger of strong winds along the west and southwest coasts of the Cape Provinces, which could cause further disruptions. Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to stay vigilant and follow the necessary precautions.
To ensure public safety, the SAWS has recommended several steps: avoid crossing flooded roads or swollen streams, relocate to higher ground if water levels rise, and refrain from using bridges or roads in low-lying areas. With heavy rain expected across multiple regions, the public is urged to stay informed and prepared.
