Bongani Nkosi, the suspect linked to the fatal shootings of nine victims outside a tavern in Pienaar in January, has claimed that he acted in self-defense. Nkosi is currently seeking bail in the KaBokweni Magistrates Court, where he detailed the events in an affidavit read by his lawyer, Nkosingiphile Maluka. Nkosi alleges that the deadly confrontation began when a group of armed individuals in a VW Polo started shooting at patrons at Levisa Bar Lounge, including himself and others in the area.
According to Nkosi, the armed individuals shot into the air and in the direction of patrons, prompting everyone to take cover. He claims that as the situation escalated, one of the attackers approached his vehicle with a firearm that had an extended magazine, making threats and continuing to shoot. Nkosi states that fearing for his life and the safety of those around him, he responded by firing his own weapon in self-defense. He insists that he did not know how many victims were killed until later when he was informed of the charges.

Nkosi, dressed in a navy jacket, green T-shirt, and jeans, maintained his innocence throughout the court proceedings. He expressed his desire to be released on bail, citing his responsibility to care for his family and stating that he is not a violent person. His wife, Rianah Mshwane, also testified in court, explaining the emotional toll the situation has taken on their family, particularly as her husbandβs incarceration has disrupted their lives.
However, Sergeant Ben Nkambule disputed Nkosiβs version of events, arguing that Nkosi and his co-accused acted with clear intent to kill. According to the sergeant, the attackers were not shooting randomly, but deliberately aimed at the victims, specifically targeting their heads. He also highlighted that there was no evidence of random gunfire around the area, challenging Nkosi’s claim of self-defense. The court will now weigh the evidence before deciding on the bail application.
