A police manhunt is underway in Limpopo after four awaiting-trial prisoners escaped from a prison on Monday, 10 February. The suspectsβKnowledge Dhambuza (36), Limited Dhambuza (25), Eric Zion Nechikhovele (39), and Joao Chauke (27)βare all foreign nationals and were being held under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act for tampering with essential infrastructure.

According to police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the escape was discovered after a loud noise was heard coming from the direction of the cells. Upon investigation, several prison doors were found to have been forcibly opened. The police have since set up a team of detectives to track down the escapees and investigate the circumstances surrounding their breakout.
This incident adds to a growing concern in Limpopo about the rise in prison escapes. Earlier this year, on 10 January, another awaiting-trial prisoner, Thembinkosi Gift Mabunda (24), managed to escape from police custody in Malamulele after appearing in court, further heightening public fear.
Frans Kgasago, chairman of the Limpopo Community Policing Forum, voiced serious concerns about the frequency of these incidents, stressing the impact on community safety. With the escapees potentially fleeing the country, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the suspects immediately.
