Relief and gratitude fill the hearts of Zakariya Desai’s family following his safe return after a harrowing five-month kidnapping ordeal. The KwaZulu-Natal businessman, a co-owner of Desai’s Cash & Carry in KwaDukuza, was abducted on September 9, 2024, moments after a night prayer. Armed suspects in a silver VW Polo seized him by force, firing multiple shots as bystanders attempted to intervene.

Authorities confirmed Desai’s release, bringing a wave of relief to his loved ones and the community. Family spokesperson Salim Tootla expressed their immense gratitude, acknowledging divine intervention and the power of collective prayers. He emphasized the family’s need for privacy and stated they would not be making further comments at this time.

The case has taken unexpected turns, with charges against three initial suspectsβ€”two Mozambican nationals and a South African police officerβ€”being withdrawn last month. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that Esmael Maulide Ramos Nangy, Stefane Pereira Da Costa Brites, and Samkeliso Honest Mlotshwa would no longer face charges of kidnapping, extortion, and attempted murder.

Despite these developments, the investigation remains open. KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed that no arrests have been made following Desai’s release. He noted that details are limited as the family has requested time to recover from the ordeal.

As the dust settles, lingering questions remain about the masterminds behind the abduction and whether justice will be served. For now, Desai’s safe return is a moment of solace for his family and the broader KwaDukuza community.
