Fourteen South African soldiers who lost their lives in the escalating conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will receive full military honors as they are laid to rest. Their sacrifice has been acknowledged at the highest levels, with Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga confirming that their remains are expected to return to South Africa on Thursday.

Addressing the National Assembly debate on the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops’ deployment in the DRC, Motshekga provided details of the fallen soldiers’ origins. Seven hailed from Limpopo, three from the Free State, and the others from North West, Eastern Cape, and Northern Cape. Their service and commitment to peacekeeping efforts in one of Africa’s most volatile regions will be commemorated with the highest military respect.

The repatriation of their remains faced unexpected delays, prolonging the grief of their families and the nation. Initially scheduled to arrive last week, their journey was temporarily halted. Over the weekend, the SANDF confirmed that their bodies had been transported from the DRC to the United Nations Logistics Base in Entebbe, Uganda. From there, arrangements have been made to bring them home to South Africa.

Each name on the list of the fallen represents a story of dedication and bravery, individuals who put their lives on the line in the name of duty. The soldiers who paid the ultimate price in the line of service are:

  • Staff Sergeant Shwahlane Theophilus Seepe
  • Corporal Rinae Nemavhulani
  • Rifleman Mokete Joseph Mobe
  • Rifleman Derrick Maluleke
  • Rifleman Sebatane Richard Chokoe
  • Corporal Matome Justice Malesa
  • Lance Bombardier Itumeleng Macdonald Moreo
  • Lance Corporal Tseke Moffat Molapo
  • Lance Corporal Metse Stansly Raswiswi
  • Private Peter Jacobus Strydom
  • Staff Sergeant Molahlehi Ishmael Molahlehi
  • Staff Sergeant William Eddie Cola
  • Rifleman Tshidiso Andries Mabele
  • Rifleman Calvin Louis Moagi

The loss of these men is deeply felt, not just by their families but by the entire nation. Their dedication to peacekeeping and service to South Africa will be honored in full measure. As they return home, their bravery will be remembered, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
