Two female officers from the Heidedal police station in Bloemfontein, a Constable and a Sergeant, were arrested on Thursday, February 6, 2025, following accusations of assaulting a 40-year-old woman. The incident, which took place inside the police station, has sparked outrage after a video of the assault went viral on social media.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson, Lizzy Suping, confirmed that the two officers are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Friday, February 7. The victim, who had reportedly gone to the police station to file a domestic violence report, was allegedly attacked after a disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation.
The video, lasting over two minutes, shows the assault in chilling detail. In the footage, a female officer is seen slapping the victim across the face, followed by another officer who pushes her toward the entrance of the station. Despite her attempts to resist, the victim is forcibly moved, while the officers maintain control.
The provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, stated that the provincial commissioner was aware of the viral video and emphasized the seriousness with which the South African Police Service (SAPS) is treating the allegations. “The matter is currently under investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), and internal investigations are also underway to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Makhele explained.
While acknowledging the public outcry, police management stressed that due process must be followed. The SAPS reiterated that the legal and procedural frameworks regarding suspensions and the removal of officers from duty require formal investigations before any actions can be taken. “Such actions can only be decided following the outcomes of formal investigations,” said Makhele.
Free State police commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, also reiterated the commitment of the SAPS to uphold principles of fairness and justice. He stated that while misconduct by police officers will not be tolerated, it is essential that both officers involved be allowed to provide their side of the story. Motswenyane noted that understanding the full context, including events leading up to the incident, is necessary for a comprehensive investigation and a fair evaluation of the situation.
As the investigation progresses, both the public and the police force are closely monitoring the case, with many calling for swift action and accountability for the officers involved in this disturbing act of violence.
