World Read Aloud Day was celebrated with great success in KZN, with pupils at Windy Heights Primary School in Malukazi taking part in an event that highlighted the importance of reading and literacy. The celebration, held on Wednesday, 5 February, was organized by the KZN Department of Education in partnership with Nal’ibali, KCap Arts School, The Playhouse Company, and the cast of Uzalo.

The day featured a variety of educational activities designed to promote reading, with a special performance of Green Future, a stage play by KCap and Playhouse. The play raised awareness about climate change and its detrimental effects, while also engaging pupils in an interactive learning experience.

Nomonde Timakwe from Room to Read emphasized the significance of events like World Read Aloud Day, which not only highlight the importance of reading but also encourage active participation through reading aloud. “Language and literacy are essential parts of everyone’s life, regardless of their career,” she stated.

Grade 7 student Kuhlesibonge Dlamini shared how reading helps young people build language skills and expand their understanding of the world. “Reading is a lifelong skill that builds vocabulary and knowledge,” he said, encouraging his peers to read more to enhance their literacy and gain valuable insights. The event aimed to foster a love for reading and strengthen literacy skills among students in the region.
