A 30-year-old Mpumalanga farmer is set to appear in court on Thursday, February 6, after being arrested for selling expired and spoiled food to retailers. The farmer allegedly collected expired food from chain stores and distributors, claiming he used it to feed his domestic animals.
However, an investigation by the Hawks and local health inspectors uncovered shocking evidence. Upon visiting the farm, authorities discovered two warehouses filled with food deemed unsafe for human consumption, including expired canned goods, rotten meat, and dairy products.
In addition to the unsuitable food items, officials found seven freezers packed with repackaged wheat, flour, and maize meal. They also uncovered equipment such as vacuum sealers, scales, and pricing machines, which were likely used for repackaging the expired food for resale.
The discovery has raised concerns about food safety, and an intensive investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the operation. Authorities are now focusing on the vehicles linked to the illegal food trade.
