The number of illegal miners, known as zama zamas, receiving medical care at Stilfontein Hospital has risen in recent days, following a series of rescue operations at a disused mine in the area. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed its collaboration with the North West Department of Health to ensure that healthcare is provided to the miners who were recently retrieved from Shaft 11 of the Stilfontein mine. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, national police spokesperson, explained that daily inspections are conducted at police holding cells, and any miners in need of medical attention are transferred to local hospitals under police supervision.
On January 21, 2025, Tshegofatso Mothibedi, spokesperson for the North West Department of Health, reported the death of one illegal miner, Koali Rankomo, who had been rescued from the shaft. Rankomo, along with 32 others, was admitted to Tsheping Hospital in Klerksdorp after being diagnosed with gastroenteritis and dehydration. The group of miners was part of the 33 people apprehended during the National Rescue Operation, which targeted illegal mining activities in the region. Despite the tragic loss, Mothibedi emphasized that the miners received prompt medical attention after their rescue.
The number of miners receiving treatment at Stilfontein Hospital has grown significantly since Monday, rising from nine to 32 by January 21. Brigadier Mathe refuted claims that illegal miners were being denied proper medical care, stating that all hospitalized miners are under police guard and receiving the necessary treatment. This development comes as part of the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining in the area, with authorities ensuring both the safety of the miners and the integrity of the operation.
Operation Vala Umgodi, an intensive two-month initiative aimed at dismantling illegal mining operations, has now entered its final phase. Police Minister Bheki Cele announced that the third phase of the operation, which involved extracting thousands of illegal miners, is complete. However, operations will continue at key mining sites, including Shaft 11, with police and mining experts working together to prevent further illegal activities. A comprehensive report on the operation is yet to be finalized, but authorities remain committed to addressing the ongoing challenges posed by illegal mining in Stilfontein.
