Veteran Xitsonga musician Dr. Thomas Chauke is mourning the loss of his wife, Ethel Chauke, who passed away at the age of 58 after a brief illness. Ethel was not only a beloved member of the family but also a key figure in Dr. Chauke’s musical journey as one of the backing vocalists in his group, The Shinyori Sisters. Her contributions to the music industry, particularly her angelic voice and presence, will be deeply missed by her family, fans, and the music community.

The Chauke family, who reside in Salema, Giyani, Limpopo, confirmed Ethel’s passing and expressed their grief. She lived at home with Dr. Chauke, their children, and their 21 grandchildren. In a statement, the family shared that Ethel’s absence leaves a significant void, as she was an integral part of both the family and the musical group.
Dr. Chauke, 78, is renowned for his distinctive sound, blending electric guitar melodies with the powerful voices and traditional dances of his wives and the Shinyori Sisters. Despite the changes in his group over the years—starting with 13 members and eventually finding himself surrounded only by his wives—Dr. Chauke’s music has remained a cherished part of the South African musical landscape. His marriage history includes five unions, with Ethel being a central part of his personal and professional life until her passing.
In 2016, Dr. Chauke was honored with the Order of Ikhamanga by former President Jacob Zuma for his exceptional contributions to the arts, culture, music, and beyond. Ethel was present at the ceremony, standing by her husband as he received this prestigious award. As the family and fans alike reflect on her legacy, Dr. Chauke’s loss is deeply felt, and the music world mourns the passing of a significant figure who helped shape the sound of Xitsonga music.
